In the vast realms of music, many choose to freely roam and defy the usual yardsticks set up as industry metrics; El poder de la Infancia is a creative outfit that caught our attention, particularly for this reason, as the band's signature is a melange of different genres, weaved into avant-garde instrumentalism that is worth-discussing. Their latest EP "Campamento" released on Tunitemusic, gave us just the opportunity to discuss this idiosyncratic alias.
Putting a singular label or genre tag on El poder de la Infancia (translating to "The Power of Childhood") would be shallow, as the Argentine band inventively meanders through various styles, notably post-rock, jazz, funk, and electronica with impressive know-how. Notwithstanding cultural identity, they heavily incorporate South American musical influences to demarcate themselves further. Their debut came with the "Live Session" compilation in 2019, followed by the four-track preliminary EP "Lo Que Es || Lo Que No" ("What Is || What Is Not"). The constituent tunes vary experimentally, from old-school funk in "Gosthel" to the jazz-fusion outlier "Una Onza."
"Campamento" is in the same vein as its predecessors, as the band's exploratory inclinations are very much on display; right from "Ascensor," the listener is ushered into an expansive world of shifting soundscapes— there are constants such as the robust, cavorting bass— and then there are the variables like the rich array of percussions and other instruments, an experience that comes off every-bit spontaneous and untainted by any rigid sequencing in the arrangements. Before parting ways, the first tune provides a heightened finisher with a cacophonous roar from wailing synths; but it's back to business after, as "Purificación" takes the reins in equal fervor and tempo, if not more. The bass turns more spunky, and other ingredients such as organic foleys are sprinkled intermittently— towards the end we make the acquaintance of a snazzy rock guitar solo, which offers more grit and drive to the composition right before the curtains fall.
