Whisper in the Wind is a 17-track album from The Como Brothers that blends songwriting with emotion as each track highlights different stages of their career while also bringing to light how much of their family background has influenced the way they approach songwriting. Songs like "Halo or Wings," "The Ride," "Wanna Be" and "Your Baby I'll Be" touch on love, ambition, family and uncertainty, with most of the writing drawing from personal experiences or situations the brothers have experienced themselves. Throughout the album, there are also influences of pop-rock, country, folk and retro that can be heard, with the brothers aiming to use the recurring approach of direct storytelling, strong melodic hooks and closely layered vocal harmonies to connect each style together. The collaborations with Joe Ragosta and Sam Woolf also add to those approaches without taking away from the brothers' own identity across the album.

The Way Personal Experiences Influence the Songwriting on Whisper in the Wind

Personal experiences make up a fundamental foundation of the songwriting present through each song in Whisper in the Wind, since each track takes inspiration from experiences The Como Brothers had in their own lives. "Halo or Wings" shows this approach strongly as it incorporates religious imagery and references to halos, wings and heaven to describe someone the narrator sees as possessing this angelic vibe to them, giving the lyrics more meaning and a memorable quality in the way it talks about attraction and faith without overcomplicating the idea. "The Ride" looks at personal writing in a different way, since the song reflects on the brothers' experiences having performed shows for years with only a few people coming out to support, or in some cases with nobody present there, before they came to the realization that there is not always one final point where someone can proudly say they have completely "made it." By touching on that idea, it gives the song a more reflective tone, since the difficult parts that come with chasing a career have not been overlooked, and instead, are treated like they are part of the journey itself.

"Your Baby I'll Be" builds on that personal approach with the focus being placed on family, as the song was written for the brothers' mother and uses the mother and son perspective to show that connection can continue to be even when people grow older. "Wanna Be" then showcases an ambitious side of the album, as the song focuses on lyrics that detail the desire of wanting more success and the concept of seeing your name lit up on signs. The writing makes sure that idea is easy to follow, but the production brings in the personality since the song begins with a lighter reggae-influenced before gradually becoming fuller and energetic. "Life With You" then brings the focus of the songwriting back to talking about relationships like about the feelings one can have for their wife with this track later being used as the first dance song for Andrew's wedding. Having this kind of personal connection comes through in the songwriting, with the lyrics focusing on wanting to share your life with one person and making that idea the main emotional focus of the track.

The Role of Melody and Vocal Harmonies Across Whisper in the Wind

Whisper in the Wind also uses melodies and vocal harmonies as key elements of the album, since it shifts between country, folk, pop-rock and retro influences while ensuring that across each song, the vocals remain a central focus. The title track highlights this perfectly with three-part harmonies becoming one of the strongest melodic parts of the song as the different voices come together over a shuffling rhythm and banjo-led production. Having that combination present here gives the track a fuller sound, while allowing the lyrics to remain easy to follow since the song focuses on letting go of things that cannot be controlled.

Whisper in the Wind as an album feels like a strong representation of where The Como Brothers are at as songwriters today, especially with how often the album talks about their own experiences, making each song, each lyric very relatable. Their place as top 3 finalists in the American Songwriter Road Ready Competition also adds to that relevance, since their album highlights how much attention to detail the brothers place on the lyrics, melodies and the way each idea eventually becomes a complete track. Therefore, Whisper in the Wind ultimately feels like a strong overall representation of how much The Como Brothers have grown as writers while still keeping the directness and personal tone that has been present throughout most of their music.
