Indie-rockers Marcus: The Apex Predator! have broken their radio hiatus with a thunderous brio, furnishing the five-track EP "Newborn Fossil" in the process. Their creative intent with this project is clear as day: stay true to their undiluted, authentic hard rock signature— a sonic staple they have offered prior on their debut album. With renewed vigor, the group has fired on all cylinders on this dynamic endeavor!
The Motor City outfit is wholly inspired by the rich history of Detroit, especially when it comes to music. Formed in 2015, the band has shown a proclivity for a trademark sound cut out for sold-out arenas, distinctively fusing ear-candy hooks and hefty, muscular arrangements: a lot of which does remind us of the rebellious emo and hard-rock era which thrived during the 2000s, and has seen a revival in the last few years. Take for instance the opening track "Standards and Practices": the song kicks up a storm with the sinew instrumentation, matched equally in fervor by the excited performances.
With a badass mug of a kitty as its album cover, we already knew there were goodies on this EP; the titular track gets straight to business, the overdriven guitars kickstart with sharp, striding gait— amidst all this raucous, the vocals remain in charge with the raw, determined delivery. The second tune "Lo-Fi" opens up with even gnarlier, tastefully distorted guitar tones and lyrics which unflinchingly center around existential angst. The standout performer amongst this is "Plenty & Shine," awarding the listeners with towering, grungy guitars strutting around with propulsive drums, a track meant to be every bit uplifting with a touch of nostalgia. "No Fraction" ends the show with a mean and relentless composition, aggravated and fierce— the guitars here are unruly with the distorted and scratchy texture, and the cynical vocals power the razor-edged instrumental.
